As with any type of criminal investigation, the less suspicious the criminals are that someone is aware of their "gig," the better chance the authorities have of capturing them, rather than just exposing their operation. There is a difference. Many scams have been exposed, but unless the scammer behind the operation is caught, they will likely just move on to another scam, or fine tune the current one into something better and more believable. So, the key is to catch them as quickly as possible. Alert authorities as soon as there is suspicion of fraudulent activity.
There are many forms of internet fraud and online scams. It is a fact that most people tend to believe what they hear or read. It is also a fact that the internet is full of predators depending on individuals to accept the information that they are given as the truth, without further investigating the information or company.
Internet scamming crimes are often hard to investigate because there are just so many of them out there. It is also difficult because scammers are constantly changing their tactics and approach. This makes it harder and harder to recognize the scam before it is much too late. There are numerous frauds and scams that have been around for centuries, but with our ever growing and changing technology, the scammers are able to target more and more victims. With internet scams, the victims are completely destroyed by someone they have never even seen.
Do enough research to know without a doubt that anyone, whether it is a company or an individual is legitimate and that they are exactly who they say they are. If you have any doubts or hunches, then do not give them sensitive information. In today's internet savvy world, it is easy to understand the hesitation and reservations people are having about releasing personal information without at least looking into the matter a bit further, and most people and companies understand the situation. Any legitimate business would rather have a safe customer than a sorry one.
There are several ways to both report and check out any entity or individual of whom you are suspicious. One way is to contact the Better Business Bureau. They will have information on any company that has or has had complaints filed against them. Another way to report suspected scams is to contact the FBI's Cyber Mission. It was developed specifically for investigating internet crimes. If you go to their website, then you will find several pointers and tips for avoiding scammers.
